Microsoft and Other Firms Address the Needs of Their Employee New Parents \u2013 And One Positive Signal is Sent"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1128 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/ga-institute.com\/to-the-point\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Microsoft-logo-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ga-institute.com\/to-the-point\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Microsoft-logo-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/ga-institute.com\/to-the-point\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Microsoft-logo-300x297.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ga-institute.com\/to-the-point\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Microsoft-logo.jpg 535w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 85vw, 150px\" \/>Demonstrations of Corporate Citizenship are steadily on the rise \u2013 Microsoft is today\u2019s example of the corporate body being a responsible corporate citizen with new requirements in its sourcing and supply chain activities.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The top Silicon Valley companies are in the vanguard of stock market appreciation \u2013 that is, for both financial appreciation (as expressed in ever-rising equity pricing) and society\u2019s general appreciation for good work that the company is doing.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1129 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/ga-institute.com\/to-the-point\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/FANG-stocks-company-logos-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ga-institute.com\/to-the-point\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/FANG-stocks-company-logos-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ga-institute.com\/to-the-point\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/FANG-stocks-company-logos-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ga-institute.com\/to-the-point\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/FANG-stocks-company-logos.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The FANG stocks (<strong>Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix, Google\/now Alphabet<\/strong>, were identified as such by <strong>Jim Cramer<\/strong> of <strong>CNBC\u2019s Mad Money<\/strong> program for investors).<\/p>\n<p>These stocks outperformed the <strong>S&amp;P 500 Index<\/strong>(TM) companies in recent years. Their demonstrations of corporate citizenship have gotten mixed reviews thanks to mis-steps in their operations and marketing and other aspects of corporate management.<\/p>\n<p>Cramer, adjusting his outlook, turned attention to two companies that \u201ccould rule the world again\u201d \u2013 <strong>Microsoft<\/strong> and <strong>Intel<\/strong>. \u201cThere are again reigning supreme,\u201d said Cramer in April 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Here at <strong>G&amp;A Institute<\/strong>, we closely follow the <em>responsibility and sustainability journeys<\/em> of these two large-cap companies.\u00a0 MSFT and INTL (both <strong>NASDAQ<\/strong> listed) are two of the <em>top corporate citizens<\/em> that we admire and recommend to other company managers and to investors as companies <em>doing the right things for the right reasons.\u00a0 Demonstrating that they are striving to be good corporate citizens in this age of great skepticism about the corporate sector. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Just last week, Microsoft announced that it would require that its U.S. supply chain partners and business partners offer paid family leave to bring those benefits for their workers in line with the benefits enjoyed by MSFT employees.\u00a0 The policy will be implemented over the next year.<\/p>\n<p>The benefits include a minimum of 12 paid weeks of parental leave, capping at US$1,000 per week paid to employees, applied to new parents of a child and to those adopting a child.<\/p>\n<p>Said the company:<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">\u201cLike many large employers, we welcome the opportunity to engage in the important national conversation about how all U.S. workers, regardless of where they work, can access paid parental leave.\u00a0 In the meantime, we will continue to focus our resources on doing business with companies that share our commitment to increase work inclusion and support our employees and their families.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The new policy applies to supply partners with more than 50 employees and covers workers that \u201cperform substantial work for Microsoft\u201d \u2013 that will include thousands of supply chain workers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Washington State<\/strong>, where the company is based, adopted law <em>(\u201cWashington State Family Leave Act \/ FLA\u201d)<\/em> to provide for unpaid, job-protected leave in a 12-month period following the birth or adoption of a child starting in January 2020. The law also allows time to care for a sick family member (16 weeks, partial pay) in a year.\u00a0 Women suffering pregnancy-related medical complications can possibly get up to 18 weeks of partially-paid leave, according to a <strong><em>Working Mother<\/em><\/strong> analysis.<\/p>\n<p>Federal law protects 12 weeks of family leave in a 12-month period. The law also allows time to care for a sick family member (16 weeks, partial pay) in a year.\u00a0 \u00a0Tech<\/p>\n<p>MSFT has 131,000 employees worldwide and 30,000-plus employees at the main campus in Redmond in Washington State.\u00a0 Many MSFT suppliers in the state are covered by the new law and Microsoft said it did not want to leave the employees of its vast out-of-state supply chain network \u201cbehind\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-1130\" src=\"https:\/\/ga-institute.com\/to-the-point\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Forbes_BestEmployersforWomen2018-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>The company was named to the <strong>Forbes\u2019 \u201cBest Employers for Women\u201d<\/strong> list in 2018 (ranked at #212); was ranked #25 by Forbes on the \u201cAmerica\u2019s Best Employers\u201d list; and #2 on the \u201cWorld\u2019s Best Employers\u201d list.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Good Corporate Citizens by This Measurement<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Other tech companies offering parental leave include <strong>Netflix<\/strong> \u2013 with a paid year off of paid maternity leave; <strong>Amazon<\/strong> with 20 weeks; <strong>Apple<\/strong> and <strong>Alphabet<\/strong> with 18 weeks;<strong> Facebook<\/strong> with 17; <strong>HP<\/strong> with 10 weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Salaried employees at Netfix, of all genders, get up to a year off with full pay following the birth or adoption of child.\u00a0 A comprehensive analysis of the tech platform leaders and other \u201cInternet-of-All-Things) companies was performed by Recode in January 2018.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>G&amp;A Perspective<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A number of U.S. tech companies are in the dock for various reasons, such as Facebook and Google and others for their shortcomings of their privacy protection policies and allegations of interference in the elections in the U.S.A. and other sovereign nations.<\/p>\n<p>The leaders of Facebook, Twitter and Google will be testifying at the U.S. <strong>Senate Intelligence Committee<\/strong> this week (the elected officials want to know what the companies are doing to prepare for the November 2018 mid-term elections).<\/p>\n<p>Twitter\u2019s CEO will be testifying before the <strong>House Energy and Commerce Committee<\/strong>, whose members want to know what the company is doing to monitor the people posting on the platform.<\/p>\n<p>Against these and other developments putting tech leaders in the spotlight \u2013 and calls for \u201cregulation\u201d of some kinds in North America and in Europe \u2013 the tech leaders are doing their best to demonstrate \u201cgood corporate citizenship\u201d in the U.S.A.\u00a0 What about in other countries\u2026such as China?\u00a0 Stay Tuned!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Finally, a Footnote from G&amp;A Institute:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Corporate Citizenship<\/em> is an older term for activities that today are often are described as \u201cCSR \u2013 Corporate Social Responsibility\u201d;
